General instructions for creating a Meaningful Text Illustration (MTI)

These directions are also modified to focus on particular types of texts—e.g., proverbs, quotations, idiomatic expressions, metaphors, poetry, long-term goals—or to study certain types of vocabulary, e.g., AP/SAT vocabulary or words studied in the context of class readings.

Step 1 – Choose a text that is meaningful to you:

This “text” could be almost any series of words: a proverb; a quotation; or a short, representative passage from a song, poem, speech, or book.

Step 2 – Create a small poster to present your chosen text:

You will use half a sheet of 8 ½ x 11 white printer paper (or an equally-sized piece of colored construction paper). Your poster should contain at least:

a) your handwritten text;
b) a drawing, photo, or magazine clipping that somehow illustrates the meaning of your text.

Beyond this, you are encouraged to be as creative as you can be.

Step 3 – Using a document projector, present your poster to our class:

Your two to three (2-3) minute presentation should contain at least:

a) an explanation of your text and why it is meaningful to you;
b) a description of your illustrations and how they communicate your text’s meaning.
